Chief Executive Officer
Ian joined the Board of Axis-Shield in November 2001 from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), where he held the position of Vice President – Pharmacogenetics. At GSK, he was responsible for the delivery of pharmacogenetic tests, as well as novel diagnostic tests used in targeting GSK's medicines. Prior to joining GSK, Ian held international general management, marketing, business development and R&D positions with Abbott Laboratories, Celltech and Amersham, gaining wide expertise in the fields of pharmaceuticals and clinical diagnostics. In January 2007 Ian was appointed Chief Operating Officer and was promoted to Chief Executive Officer in January 2008. | | Ronny Hermansen MSc
Group Finance Director
Ronny has a Master of Science degree in business (CandMerc) from the University of Aalborg in Denmark. He was the Finance Director for Axis Biochemicals ASA prior to its merger with Shield Diagnostics in 1999, and in that role he was responsible for the finance, administrative and IT functions of the Group's Oslo operations. Previously, Ronny accumulated finance experience in the Norwegian pharmaceutical industry, most recently as Vice President Finance (Operations) at Nycomed Amersham. Chief Scientific Officer
Erling is a medical doctor, a Master of Science in nuclear chemistry and has a PhD in immunology. Erling founded Axis Biochemicals ASA in 1985 and was appointed to the Board of Axis-Shield when Axis Biochemicals ASA merged with Shield Diagnostics in 1999. Erling has over thirty years of experience within clinical chemistry and biochemistry. Non-Executive Chairman
Nigel was appointed Chairman of the Group in 1998. He has extensive experience of the bio-tech sector and is also Chairman of The Laird Group PLC, Oxford Instruments plc and Deltex Medical Group plc. On 10 March 2008 Nigel was appointed a non-executive director of Bioquell plc. Nigel is the Chairman of the Compensation and Nomination Committees of Axis-Shield. | | Staffan Ek BSc
Non-Executive Director
Staffan joined the Board in March 2006. He has extensive knowledge of the healthcare sector, acquired over thirty years in the industry, primarily with Pharmacia, Boehringer Mannheim and Roche Diagnostics. Staffan retired from Roche at the end of 2005, where he was President of Diabetes Care, an Executive Director of Roche Diagnostics, and a permanent participant of the Corporate Executive Committee of F Hoffmann-La Roche AG, Basle, Switzerland. Staffan is a non-executive director of Facet Technologies LLC, Atlanta, USA and DAKO A/S, Glostrup, Denmark. Non-Executive Director
Bay was appointed to the Board in March 2005. He has over thirty years' experience in corporate finance and is currently Vice Chairman of Dresdner Kleinwort. Bay is the senior independent non-executive director of RPC Group plc, Chairman of its Audit Committee and a member of its Remuneration and Nomination Committees. Bay is also a non-executive director of Invensys PLC, Chairman of its Audit Committee and a member of the Remuneration and Nominating Committees. Bay is Chairman of the Audit Committee and a member of the Compensation and Nomination Committees of Axis-Shield. Non-Executive Director
John joined the Board in March 2009. He has extensive experience in the life sciences sector. He is Chairman of BTG plc and CXR Biosciences Ltd and a non-executive Director of Vectura Group plc, and was a Director of Cambridge Antibody Technology plc until its acquisition by AstraZeneca .
In the public sector he Chairs the Roslin Foundation and the Life Sciences Industry Advisory Board and is a non-executive director of the Technology Strategy Board. He is an advisor to several private equity and venture capital funds, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Honorary Professor of the University of Edinburgh.

Kjersti has an MSc in Biotechnology. She has been with the company 22 years (since the start of Axis Biochemicals in Norway). Kjersti has held different positions ranging from research scientist, product manager, area manager, marketing director and now holds the position Commercial Director - PoC, based in Oslo. | | Colin King MBA
Site Director, Laboratory Division
Colin has a business administration degree from the University of Abertay. He has 15 years' experience in operations management and has coordinated a number of large profile projects. Colin is an example of Axis-Shield's succession planning, having joined Axis- Shield 12 years ago. He has held various positions within the Laboratory Division’s management team culminating in his promotion during 2007 to site director. | | Simon Richards Ph.D.
Group Director Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs
Simon has a Ph.D. from the University of Wales, Cardiff. Following 3 years post-doctoral work in arthritis research, he has worked in the IVD and Vaccine industry for over 18 years. Simon worked at Amersham International, Johnson and Johnson, DPC and Chiron/Novartis before joining Axis-Shield in January 2008. Previous positions encompassed a variety of Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement and Regulatory Affairs roles at increasing levels of seniority. He is also a Six-Sigma Black Belt. In March 2009 he was appointed as Group Director QA/RA. Simon is responsible for Quality and Regulatory Affairs across the Group. |  | |  | |  | Guido Schilling
Managing Director, Axis-Shield AG Switzerland
Guido has worked in the Pharmaceutical and Diagnostic Industry for over 30 years. He holds a Swiss Federal Diploma in Marketing and Sales Management obtained at the University of St Gallen. Guido has held various positions in national and international management, mainly within pharmaceutical companies. He joined Nycomed AG Switzerland in 1993 as Marketing Manager, responsible for the pharmaceutical and diagnostic product portfolio. Managing Director, Medinor Group
Atle has a Business Administration degree (Siviløkonom) from the University of Lund. He has held various positions, including controlling, marketing and administration within medical, pharmaceutical, dental and laboratory supply companies in Norway. Site Director, PoC
Ralf qualified as Diplom Ingenieur (Chemical Technique/Process) from the University of Stuttgart. He has an MSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin and is a DSc from the Chemical Institute of the University of Oslo. He started his working life in 1992 as a scientist in the oil and gas sector, progressing to senior engineer and then technical chief within Norsk Hydro Aluminium, Germany. John has a Bachelor of Science degree from Plymouth State College (Plymouth, NH). He has worked in the diagnostics industry for 20 years at Roche (Boehringer Mannheim), Instrumentation Laboratory and Bayer HealthCare. He joined Axis-Shield in 2004 from Bayer Diagnostics, where he was Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Business Development for Near Patient Testing. Business Development Director
George is a pharmacist who previously worked for Unipath Limited and Boehringer Ingelheim. George is a founder member and ex-chairman of the UK In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) Industry Trade Association, BIVDA, and a prominent figure in the European IVD industry. George joined the Group in 1989. He is charged with developing new business for Axis-Shield, particularly for OEM contracts with multinational organisations. | | | |
